ISOPA / ALIPA and secova cooperate

30.12.2022

All ISOPA/ALIPA training topics on the correct handling of diisocyanates can now also be assigned, carried out and recorded using the sam® EHS software

ISOPA/ALIPA and secova are ready: A three-year transition phase ends on August 24, 2023, after which a binding restriction on the handling of “diisocyanates” will come into force in accordance with the EU REACH Regulation. It states that training is mandatory for products with a diisocyanate content of 0.1% or more. Appropriate instruction must then be given before industrial or commercial use. Suppliers must make their customers aware of this and provide them with appropriate training and materials. As the European trade association for manufacturers of aromatic diisocyanates and polyols, ISOPA/ALIPA ensures that all parties involved have access to accurate and up-to-date information. The individual training topics can be purchased directly from ISOPA/ALIPA. For users of the EHS software solution sam® from secova, it is even easier and more convenient: thanks to the cooperation that has now been agreed, the complete catalog of topics is available to them directly in the system on request.

The advantages for sam® users are manifold: The amount of work and time required is noticeably reduced, as the topics do not have to be ordered individually and all users do not have to be registered individually. This also eliminates the need for various manual steps, such as the necessary logging. Instead, all training courses are integrated directly into the system, can be individually assigned from there and are then automatically logged in an audit-proof manner. A special plus and typical of sam® is the ease of use – as simple as an ATM. Employees can therefore carry out their training online at their workplace in the usual way, but also from home in their home office. Which individual diisocyanate training courses need to be carried out depends on the respective application and task. Depending on the exposure risk, there are three different performance levels (1. Basis, 2. advanced and 3. professionals).

From compulsory to optional – sam® reduces effort and facilitates effective implementation

It makes sense and is practical to combine the diisocyanate training courses with the appropriate hazardous substance training courses, especially as these courses do not exempt you from the applicable training requirements. The challenges surrounding diisocyanates therefore offer a good opportunity to take a holistic view of the topic of EHS , and not just because of the cooperation with Isopa/Alipa. The numerous tasks and duties in the areas ofenvironment, healthandsafetycan be managed noticeably more effectively and with less effort with the help of an EHS management system. In sam® , numerous function modules are available for this purpose, which can be selected according to individual requirements and ideally complement each other. In addition, secova provides all sam® users with over 300 ready-made training topics in various languages. So the duty becomes a free program.

What are diisocyanates anyway, where are they used and why are there restrictions?
Diisocyanates and polyols are the chemical building blocks for the production of polyurethanes, which are derived from them and would not exist without them. Polyurethanes are used in many different ways to manufacture a wide range of products for buildings, household appliances, cars, adhesives and sealants, for example. The European Parliament and the European Council have both classified diisocyanates as respiratory and skin sensitizers category 1. The corresponding restrictions on handling these substances are intended to ensure that every employee is demonstrably aware of the hazards and possible risks involved and has sufficient knowledge of the appropriate measures for occupational safety and risk minimization.

ISOPA represents the most important European manufacturers of aromatic diisocyanates and polyols, the most important raw materials for the production of polyurethanes. For more information on diisocyanates, their applications and ISOPA’s product stewardship initiatives, please visit the ISOPA website.

ALIPA was founded by the major European manufacturers of aliphatic isocyanates and polyisocyanates – key components for high-quality coatings, adhesives and elastomers – to promote the safe and proper use of these substances. Further information on ALIPA’s objectives and initiatives can be found on the ALIPA website.
